Bespoke thinnings machines - Our harvester has been custom built to fit down 3 metre racks allowing for low impact and minimal damage to the growing crop. Racks are made and timber is cut to one side then a return which selects and removes the trees in between the formed racks. Our skilled operators with a forestry background select the trees for removal. The forwarder again sourced for its size fits down the racks and extracts the timber to stacking bays at the forest edge. Running on the brash mat limits the damage to the forest floor. The brash eventually breaks down and the nutrients are returned to the soil.
Thinnings - is the selective removal of trees, primarily undertaken to improve the growth rate or health of the remaining trees. Overcrowded trees are under competitive stress from their neighbours.
If a wood is left unthinned there is a high incidence of disease and windblow which affects the long term value of your wood.
Financial analysis indicates that thinned crops are more profitable with yield increases of up to 12% more than unthinned crops. Also the demand for biomass makes thinning now an opportunity to take a return at an early stage of your forests life.
Clearfelling - or logging is a forestry/logging practice in which most or all trees in an area are uniformly cut down. Along with shelterwood and seed tree harvests, it is used by foresters to create certain types of forest ecosystems and to promote select species that require an abundance of sunlight or grow in large areas.
Clearcutting is the most common and economically profitable method of logging. it is the final process in the life of your forest before you start to re design and plant for the the next generation. if you have thinned properly you should have good timber for sawlogs which are the harvest.
Long forwarding - At Treeworks we have designed and had built a road legal long forwarding trailer. This enables us to take timber from forest edge by tractor to roadside. Small shelter belts that have come of age or have been storm damaged can now be harvested and brought to roadside. It has a 14 ton capacity and greatly improves the extraction process. We pride ourselves on a low impact approach trying to limit the damage to the forest floor.
